The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is made it’s world debut on December 2 at the 2009 Los Angeles auto show.
The sixth-generation of the popular nameplate has now made its debut in its home market of South Korea. The new car was designed and developed in Orange County, California offices, and shows a design flair that’s been absent from the model’s repertoire. It adopts a new “fluidic sculpture” design language and incorporates several features and technologies not normally found in this segment.
The 2011 model is slightly larger than the one it replaces, stretching 190-inches in length, 72-inches in width, 58-inches in height, and with a wheelbase of 110-inches.
In South Korea the car is being launched with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. However, in the U.S. the base engine will be a 2.4-liter Theta II GDI unit. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is planned, but there’s no word on a V-6 version. All engines will be offered with a new six-speed automatic transmission for heightened performance.

After years of playing second fiddle to the family sedan class favorites, the latest Sonata proves that the company is worthy of first-chair status. The 2007 Hyundai Sonata builds on the strengths of last year’s completely redesigned model that captured the hearts and minds of the automotive press, and the checkbooks of scores of consumers. Along with the attractive design, fine build quality, smooth performance and quiet ride of last year’s model, the 2007 version adds a few worthwhile improvements. The steering wheel-mounted audio controls now allow one to surf station presets or CD tracks and all engines now meet ULEV (ultra-low-emission vehicle) standards.
Thanks to its generous amount of interior space, the Hyundai Sonata is actually classified by the government as a “large car,” although its exterior dimensions are squarely within the midsize family sedan category. This makes for a ‘best of both worlds’ benefit — the cabin offers plenty of room for rear passengers, while the Sonata remains relatively easy to maneuver and park on crowded city streets.

The exterior look of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata Limited is a big departure from the old Sonata’s conservative sheet metal. We especially like the ’06 version’s dual exhaust outlets and the 17-inch wheels on the LX model. All in all, though, the Hyundai Sonata looks a lot like the current-generation Accord, especially from the rear. Like previous Sonatas, the ’06 model is available with two engines, a four-cylinder and a V6. Both are all-new engines and both will be built at the Alabama factory, though early versions of the smaller engine will be built in Korea. The V6 comes standard with a new five-speed automatic transmission.
With competitive prices, long warranties and stylish new products, Hyundai is looking more and more like a young Toyota than the company that intentionally sold the Excel. The 2006 Hyundai Sonata represents an excellent value for family car shoppers. Even without its price advantage, the car still holds its own by offering an inviting interior, lots of standard features and capable engine choices, all wrapped in an attractive body. With the 2006 Hyundai Sonata’s many improvements, midsize sedan shoppers will now have to stop at one more dealership before making their final choice.
