The all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata has been the most considered vehicle on Edmunds.com for five weeks in a row – a first ever for Hyundai. And the all-new 2010 Tucson jumped all the way up to number two on the most recent list, in part because of extra marketing on the site. Sonata widened its lead over the Honda Accord and Civic, while the Tucson jumped from fourth to second, giving Hyundai ownership of the top two positions in the weekly analysis. Not surprisingly, the Sonata’s March 2010 sales were on par with both the Accord and Toyota Camry.
Edmunds analyzes consumers’ research behavior and purchase intent on the Edmunds.com website to come up with consideration data. Weekly consideration data looks at how consumers are shopping for more than 400 models on Edmunds.com. Consideration data indicates the effectiveness of a marketing campaign and may suggest future sales.
“Our two newest models, the 2011 Sonata and 2010 Tucson, are the heart of our lineup,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “We’re excited to see such positive consumer reception, not just in online consideration, but where it really counts — our showrooms.”
The Sonata, Tucson and, on occasion, the Hyundai Genesis, charged into the top 10 of most-shopped vehicles list on Edmunds.com a number of times in the first quarter. In fact, the first quarter of 2010 marked the first time ever that a Hyundai model captured the number one spot on the most shopped list since Edmunds.com began tracking shopping consideration data in 2007.
“Hyundai is doing a good job of marketing, which is driving shopping consideration, but also converting consideration to sales,” said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst and editor-at-large, who reported on this in great detail for Edmunds’ AutoObserver.com. “In March, Hyundai sold 18,935 Sonata models, putting it in the same volume territory as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, which are perennially the best-selling cars in America.”
Hyundai sold more than 3,000 Tucson models in March for a 129-percent increase over year-ago levels.
The 2011 Hyundai Azera adds power and efficiency to a model known for its luxurious appointments. The updated large sedan now includes an advanced six-speed automatic transmission and other powertrain refinements raising the bar on fuel economy in its class, while still gaining horsepower. The 2011 Azera will be available at Hyundai dealership in spring 2010.

All of these upgrades help illustrate why more and more customers are discovering how well Azera stacks up against the competition. Overall, the 2011 Azera is a strong competitor to vehicles like the Lexus ES350, Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, Buick LaCrosse and Ford Taurus. Spacious and luxurious, the Azera features more interior volume than expensive luxury sedans such as the Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 750i and Lexus LS 460. Both Azera powertrains still offer more standard horsepower than the BMW 528i demonstrating that Azera is one of the smartest premium large-sedan choices available in the American market today.
The Azera GLS is equipped with an enhanced 3.3-liter, DOHC V6 engine that now produces an estimated 250 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 233 lbs.-ft. at 4,500 rpm of torque. The performance gains were achieved by incorporating Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (DCVVT) that improves engine breathing on the intake and exhaust camshafts for better fuel economy and lower emissions. Depending on engine load and speed, DCVVT can extend or shorten the duration of the valve opening and closing for more power. Previously, the 2010 Azera only had CVVT on the intake camshaft. Now, the Azera GLS features a specially tuned intake manifold surge tank to take advantage of the new DCVVT configuration. As the first member of Hyundai’s “Lambda” engine family, this new engine also has all-aluminum construction and four valves per cylinder. It also features a Variable Intake System (VIS) that further broadens its power curve to improve the vehicle’s off-the-line acceleration and passing performance. Fuel economy estimates for the Azera GLS are 20 mpg city / 29 mpg highway.
The Azera Limited delivers powerful performance due to its revised clean and efficient all-aluminum 3.8-liter, DOHC V6 engine, which delivers an estimated 272 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 262 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. To maximize the power spread, this engine also uses DCVVT and a Variable Intake System (VIS) to help cylinders breathe efficiently at both low and high rpms. Estimated mileage figures for the Azera Limited are 18 mpg city / 28 mpg highway.
To help Azera drivers get the most out of their vehicles, Hyundai has added a fuel economy indicator in the 2011 model. The “Eco Indicator” displays a green light to indicate when driving habits are contributing to good fuel economy.
SIX-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Hyundai’s commitment to making the Azera extremely fuel efficient continues with a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control. This transmission offers smooth shifts and a wide ratio spread that ideally suits both engines’ characteristics.
Hyundai’s all-new six-speed automatic transaxle helps the company meet its goals of improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Shifts are silky-smooth with an option of manual control through the SHIFTRONIC feature.
Drivers can access the SHIFTRONIC feature by moving the gear selector into a separate gate. Pushing the selector forward or pulling it rearward will shift the transmission up or down sequentially, adding to driver control. A clear LCD readout on the instrument panel shows the gear being used.
Designed for transverse engine applications in passenger cars and CUVs, the new compact transmission puts Hyundai into an elite class of auto manufacturers who have designed their own proprietary six-speed automatic transmissions. The strength of the design is its unique layout which makes it smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six-speed transmission on the market today.
The gearbox has no dipstick because it is filled with automatic transmission fluid that increases vehicle life under normal usage conditions, thereby reducing maintenance costs.
Developed over a four-year period, this new six-speed automatic is 26.4 pounds lighter than the five-speed it replaces. It also is 1.6 inches shorter and considerably simpler, having 62 fewer parts, which is a key to increased durability, lighter weight and lower cost.
When it comes to transmissions, more gears are definitely better. The addition of a sixth gear enables closer spacing between gear ratios providing a better balance of performance and fuel economy while the wide overall gear ratio helps deliver strong, smooth acceleration.
The gearbox has three planetary gearsets and a unique flat torque converter that shortens the unit’s overall length by 0.47 inches. Four pinion differentials improve durability and further minimize size.
Another example of engineering ingenuity is found in the design of the hydraulic pressure control unit. Slight manufacturing deviations from one solenoid valve to the next often cause fluctuation in the hydraulic pressure and affect shift precision and quality. The transmission featured in the Azera cleverly integrates adjustment screws in the valves that enable each of the eight valves to be calibrated at the factory. This feature ensures stable hydraulic pressure at any shift point which facilitates a high degree of precision and control needed to deliver fast, smooth and precise shifts throughout the rpm range.
STRIKING FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Azera is reborn with a more handsome exterior design. The most noticeable exterior upgrade is a new sleeker front bumper fascia, with a number of subtle design tweaks. Design updates up-front also include redesigned headlamps with LED surround accent lighting, new chrome grille and round foglights. A high-gloss window trim treatment enhances Azera’s profile. The rear of the 2011 Azera features redesigned signature LED taillights, redesigned bumper with integrated chrome tailpipes and a matching decklid. Modernized 17-inch alloy wheels and revised side repeater mirrors with all-new bright puddle lamps light the way to Hyundai’s refined premium large car with near-luxury attributes. Overall, Azera’s proportions remain elegant, purposeful and aerodynamically efficient, reducing wind noise while adding maximum stability on the highway.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Inside, Azera’s spacious cabin provides not only roomy comfort, but a luxurious look with a new attention to detail that makes both driver and passengers feel like they are riding in a luxury sedan. These details include a new brushed metalgrain finish applied to the gear shift indicator area, cup holder cover, ashtray cover and center console cover and “EZ Lane Change Assist” (one-touch triple turn signal stalks). Slight movement of this new turn signal stalk will cause the turn signals to blink three times and then automatically go off – an ideal feature for highway passing.
The 2011 Azera offers luxurious appointments and spaciousness that rivals the finest premium competitor brands. It offers a roomy cabin with nearly 44 inches of legroom up front and more than 38 inches of legroom for rear-seat passengers. Hyundai engineers have created efficient packaging to maximize interior volume with the 2011 Azera offering more interior volume (123.5 cu.-ft.) than the Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima.
Special attention has also been paid to other interior details, such as the electroluminescent cluster display and steering wheel audio control functions. The blue backlighting for interior gauges, switches and buttons along with ion-plated accents highlight the vehicle’s modern appearance. Other unexpected luxury appointments include a power rear sunshade, integrated memory system and power-folding side mirrors with turn signal indicators and puddle lamps on the Limited version. Azera Limited also has a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, an integrated memory system, electrochromic auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink® premium door sill scuff plates and a woodgrain steering wheel and door pulls to its long list of standard equipment.
The Azera comes standard with dual front automatic climate controls, solar control glass, power seats for driver and front passenger, as well as woodgrain and metalgrain interior accents.
An AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system that includes a four-channel, 172-watt internal amplifier and six speakers comes standard in the Azera GLS. Audiophiles with even more demanding tastes will be impressed by the available Infinity audio system that includes a seven-channel, 315-watt amplifier with an in-dash six-disc CD changer and 10 speakers, standard in Limited trim levels.
Music lovers will also welcome the 2011 Azera’s inclusion of standard iPod®/USB and auxiliary input jacks to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods.
For drivers looking for the ultimate luxury options, Azera offers the Limited Trim with Navigation Package which receives a powerful Infinity 605-watt Logic 7® audio system as standard equipment in addition to its LG DVD navigation system.
SAFETY FEATURES
Maintaining Hyundai’s emphasis on class-leading safety technology, the 2011 Azera boasts impressive active and passive safety features to protect its occupants in the event of a collision, earning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) top crash test ratings for frontal offset impacts. The Azera continues to set standards by making key life-saving active safety technology standard, such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with a Traction Control System (TCS).
Also standard are independent double-wishbone front- and multi-link rear suspension, large four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Brake Assist, which provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), which automatically adjusts the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle’s brakes for optimal performance under poor road conditions, speeding, loading and other potentially hazardous situations.
Additionally, Azera offers impressive passive safety features including eight standard airbags, active front head restraints to help prevent whiplash, a Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system for children’s seats and three-point seatbelts for all positions while shingle-style rear-seat head restraints provide drivers with improved visibility. Security is further advanced with an anti-theft engine immobilizer and remote keyless entry with alarm.
LG DVD NAVIGATION
LG, the South Korean-based international manufacturer of consumer electronics has developed an exclusive navigation system for the Hyundai Azera, Elantra and Veracruz models. Using touch-screen functions, the DVD navigation system comes equipped with a premium 605-watt Infinity Logic 7 surround sound system with 12 speakers, 11-channel digital amplifier and AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 reception capability which replaces the six-disc CD changer and iPod/USB and auxiliary input jacks. It also includes mapping software for the continental United States and has available POIs (Points of Interest) for entertainment, shopping and dining. Route guidance is provided by audio and visual prompts.
COMFORTABLE AND CONTROLLED SUSPENSION
Hyundai engineers benchmarked the best cars in the category before designing the Azera’s double-wishbone front and multi-link rear four-wheel independent suspension system. By using high-tensile steel in critical unibody areas, the Azera features increased stiffness and rigidity, which ensures formidable resistance to flexing and enhanced ride and handling, while lowering interior noise levels. Attached to the Azera’s rigid structure is improved suspension and steering hardware to keep the vehicle even flatter through turns and more compliant over bumps. The suspension features four twin-tube, gas-charged dampers, softer bushings and a quick steering rack. J.D. Power and Associates officially designates Hyundai Genesis as its most appealing midsize premium car in the 2009 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM.
The J.D. Power and Associates APEAL award measures what consumers like and dislike about their new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, particularly with the vehicle’s design, content, layout and performance. Genesis received high marks for its exterior design, engine and transmission, interior comfort, and technology and entertainment features totaling 864 points – 26 points above the midsize premium car segment average. In addition, the Hyundai brand made a 16 point improvement from 2008.
“We are thrilled to accept this J.D. Power and Associates award as it truly signifies the satisfaction and pride Genesis owners have for their cars,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai’s vice-president of National Sales. “Genesis offers luxurious features and performance quality at a value unmatched by any other vehicle in its segment. And with awards like APEAL, it is clear Genesis is more than meeting expectations for consumers in the market for a premium car.”
“Throughout the years, vehicle models achieving high APEAL scores have been shown to benefit from faster sales, less need for cash incentives and higher profit margins on each vehicle sold,” said J.D. Power and Associates.
The J.D. Power and Associates APEAL award will join the growing number of Genesis honors and accolades including North American Car of the Year (a first for a Korean auto manufacturer,) Kiplinger’s Best New Model for 2009, AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Award, and more. Genesis also contributed to Hyundai’s ranking last month in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study, as Hyundai ranked the highest non-premium nameplate and fourth overall – up from thirteenth the previous year. Hyundai’s Genesis sedan sets a new benchmark in the premium car category. With a starting price of just $33,000, Genesis includes performance and luxury features typically found on vehicles costing thousands of dollars more.

This is Hyundai’s ix-onic concept, also known as the HED6, and it previews the second-generation Tucson compact crossover / SUV that was officially revealed in production form at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show this fall. Even though it’s hard to deny the styling resemblances to the Ford Kuga, the ix-onic that was penned at Hyundai’s European center looks way cooler than the anonymous Tucson.
The concept version of the 2010 Tucson that will be called in Europe ix-35 will be powered by Hyundai’s new 1.6-litre turbocharged gasoline engine that delivers an output of 175HP. This engine will be available in the production version as well other Hyundai models in the near future. It will also be joined by a new 2.0-liter turbo diesel producing 184HP.

For the 2010MY, a revolutionary new Tucson joins the rapidly evolving Hyundai product line. With AWD ( All Wheel Drive ), Tucson delivers an estimated 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway, exceeding the primary competitors’ AWD versions, including Subaru Forester.
True to Hyundai form, the Tucson applies life-saving safety technologies as standard equipment, while offering—for the first time—Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC). Tucson offers available features such as an advanced touch-screen navigation system with backup camera and XM NavTraffic and Bluetooth® streaming audio, as well as Hyundai’s first panoramic sunroof.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is made it’s world debut on December 2 at the 2009 Los Angeles auto show.
The sixth-generation of the popular nameplate has now made its debut in its home market of South Korea. The new car was designed and developed in Orange County, California offices, and shows a design flair that’s been absent from the model’s repertoire. It adopts a new “fluidic sculpture” design language and incorporates several features and technologies not normally found in this segment.
The 2011 model is slightly larger than the one it replaces, stretching 190-inches in length, 72-inches in width, 58-inches in height, and with a wheelbase of 110-inches.
In South Korea the car is being launched with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. However, in the U.S. the base engine will be a 2.4-liter Theta II GDI unit. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is planned, but there’s no word on a V-6 version. All engines will be offered with a new six-speed automatic transmission for heightened performance.

The Hyundai Veracruz is the largest vehicle Hyundai has ever sold in North America and certainly the nicest in the crossover segment. While this large crossover sport-utility vehicle maintains Hyundai’s typical value proposition, a fully loaded model can cost close to $40,000. It might seem like a lot, but the price is still very competitive with similar models. In fact for the money, there is nothing that compares to it including the Lexus RX class.
During the Veracruz’s development, Hyundai set its sights not on the typical cast of competing automakers but on the Lexus instead. As such, the Veracruz boasts an impressively luxurious cabin and a serene and quiet ride unlike most of the competitors in this segment. Anyone shopping for a large crossover SUV should at least test-drive the Veracruz. It appears to us that it is substantially ahead of the competition in a variety area, and it certainly deserves to be considered alongside the more established American and Japanese crossover SUVs. Once you drive one I am sure you will agree.

The exterior look of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata Limited is a big departure from the old Sonata’s conservative sheet metal. We especially like the ‘06 version’s dual exhaust outlets and the 17-inch wheels on the LX model. All in all, though, the Hyundai Sonata looks a lot like the current-generation Accord, especially from the rear. Like previous Sonatas, the ‘06 model is available with two engines, a four-cylinder and a V6. Both are all-new engines and both will be built at the Alabama factory, though early versions of the smaller engine will be built in Korea. The V6 comes standard with a new five-speed automatic transmission.
With competitive prices, long warranties and stylish new products, Hyundai is looking more and more like a young Toyota than the company that intentionally sold the Excel. The 2006 Hyundai Sonata represents an excellent value for family car shoppers. Even without its price advantage, the car still holds its own by offering an inviting interior, lots of standard features and capable engine choices, all wrapped in an attractive body. With the 2006 Hyundai Sonata’s many improvements, midsize sedan shoppers will now have to stop at one more dealership before making their final choice.

The Hyundai Azera is a full-size, five-passenger sedan available in GLS and Limited trim levels. Even the base model comes with an abundance of standard equipment, including 17-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats and a six-speaker stereo with CD player, satellite radio and an iPod/USB audio jack. A sunroof, leather upholstery and heated seats are optional on the GLS and standard on the Limited, which also gets a bigger engine and premium stereo. A bevy of high-end items like power-adjustable pedals and steering column, driver memory functions, Bluetooth, Logic 7 surround-sound audio and a navigation system are also available. Even when fully equipped, though, the Azera remains at a very reasonable price.
The Azera GLS is powered by a 3.3-liter V6 that produces 234 horsepower and 226 pound-feet of torque. A 3.8-liter V6 engine powers the Azera Limited, producing 263 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. On the move, the car is roomy and quiet. Hyundai likes to boast that this car has more interior volume and a bigger trunk than many full-size luxury sedans. Like all Hyundai vehicles, the Azera comes with impressive warranty coverage.

The 2010 Hyundai Accent lineup gains a new low-price model that promises high fuel economy. Accent returns as a 2-door hatchback in GS and SE trims, and as a 4-door sedan in GLS form. New for 2010 is the base Accent Blue, which has equipment levels similar to the GS. The Blue has specific transmission gear ratios and other aerodynamic tweaks that Hyundai says improves highway fuel economy up to 9 percent when compared with other Accent models. The sole engine is a 110-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard across the board. A 4-speed automatic is available on all but the Accent Blue. Available safety features include ABS, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Power windows and locks and remote entry are optional on the GS and GLS. Accent lends its basic design to the Rio from Hyundai’s Kia division, but Rio differs in features, pricing, and warranty coverage.

Vehicles like the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe are responsible for Hyundai’s reputation as a brand that offers quality and affordability. Where the previous Santa Fe had an odd but unique look, the recently redesigned, current version is about as mainstream as you can get. View the Santa Fe from various angles and you might notice a resemblance to more upscale midsize crossover SUVs such as the Lexus RX and VW Touareg. That’s not to say it looks generic — it doesn’t. What the Santa Fe does offer is a familiar look and a top-notch interior that borders on luxurious, especially in Limited trim.
Hyundai’s Santa Fe can be equipped with all this segment’s expected features, including a third-row seat and a navigation system. Buyers can also choose from models with one of two V6 engines, front- or all-wheel drive and a manual or automatic transmission. Unfortunately, you can’t really mix and match — base models have a smaller V6 with less horsepower, and many of the Limited’s comfort and convenience features are exclusive to that trim.

The 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring is a four-door hatchback available in two trim levels. The base GLS includes 15-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, heated side mirrors, a tilt steering wheel, cloth upholstery, 60/40-split rear seats, keyless entry and a six-speaker stereo with a CD/MP3 player, auxiliary/USB audio jacks and satellite radio.
Despite American’s general disdain for hatchbacks, there’s always going to be a place for this highly versatile body style. For evidence, one need look no further than the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring, which blurs the line between hatchbacks and wagons. Despite being classified as a compact hatchback, the Touring is anything but small. Its interior is surprisingly spacious, with plenty of room for full-sized adults and bulky cargo — a trait that is paramount for a family hauler. It could even be an alternative to many small crossover SUVs, as this hatchback offers sharper handling, better maneuverability and a significant fuel economy advantage.
Not to be confused with the Hyundai Elantra compact sedan, the Touring should be regarded as the sedan’s interesting overseas cousin. Introduced to America last year, the Elantra Touring was conceived in Hyundai’s European design studio, and its origins are readily apparent. From the outside, the Touring looks more athletic, with smoother flowing shapes than the sedan. Under the sheet metal, you’ll find more responsive steering and handling that provides a sportier driving experience.

Voted 2009 North American Car of the Year at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the Hyundai Genesis 4.6 sedan that arrived in our garage had a lot to live up to. We were ready to cast aside biases based on our experience with previous Hyundai cars and see if the Genesis really could come up to the level of luxury set by brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe shares its name with the Genesis sedan, but that’s effectively where the sharing stops. Yes, the Coupe’s uplevel 3.8-liter V6 is similar (though not identical) to the sedan’s base engine, and yes, the cars roll on the same basic platform. Drive them back to back, though, and you’ll think they might as well be from different planets. While the Coupe is laudably comfortable and refined, it has none of the sedan’s plush, isolated character. It’s a genuinely sporting car that can run with its benchmark, the Infiniti G37 coupe, in all respects save straight-line acceleration. If you’re looking for a stylish coupe with serious performance, the Genesis Coupe is one of the best deals on the market.
